 In June 2011 Surrey Heath Borough Council’s planning committee overturned the advice of town planners and unanimously rejected an application to redevelop Lightwater Homecare as supermarket on parking and traffic grounds. Developers wanted to demolish the DIY store on Guildford Road for a new building that would be used by an unidentified retailer.

Milford, Surrey

In 2009 Tesco submitted plans to turn the Red Lion pub in Milford into a Tesco Express store. A ‘Locals against Tesco opening in Milford’ protest page was launched on Facebook. In November two Borough Councillors distributed questionnaires to all households. 2,259 respondees objected to the plans, with just 61 in favour.
