Campaigning to curb supermarket power



Burpham, Surrey

Aldi has announced it will apply to build a supermarket at the site of the Green Man pub in Burpham, Surrey. Aldi has owned the site since 2006 but has been unable to get planning permission so far.

The site had been the home to a pub since 1593, but was demolished by Aldi in 2008. 1700 people objected to an application in 2006 for a 1000 sq metre store with flats and car parking.

Camberley, Surrey

On May 20, Tesco, in partnership with Thames Valley Housing Association, lodged an application with Surrey Heath Borough Council to renovate a dilapidated piece of council-owned land. 

Traders and residents in Frimley Road have collected more than 700 signatures and representations opposing the plans. They were concerned about traffic and impact on existing traders.

Chobham, Surrey

In May 2012 an action group was formed and a petition launched against the opening of a new Tesco Express store. Chobham Against Tesco (CAT) collected more than 700 signatures opposing the Tesco store opening in Station Road.
