Campaigning to curb supermarket power

In November 2011 plans were unveiled for a new 2,000 sq m supermarket and housing development and 130-space car park on the former Falcon Office Furniture site in Easingwold. Traders are worried about the size of the scheme and have claimed it would represent “another town centre”. Residents are also concerned the plans would cause traffic congestion. 

Guisborough, North Yorkshire

 More than 1,000 local people had objected to the plans, despite the fact that consultation period ran over the Christmas and New Year holidays. The main theme shared by most of the objections was that this thriving shopping centre, which has a good mix of local businesses and national chains, would be turned into a ghost town by a "one-stop" superstore.
