In 2015 residents opposed plans for a Co-op supermarket on the site of the Maypole pub in Halesowen. A campaign group "The Friends of The Maypole" was set up. The group applied for the pub to be listed as a community asset. This would mean the friends group becoming more involved and given first option to buy the pub if it was put up for sale.
There has been opposition to Tesco in Stourbridge since Tesco first submitted plans in 2001. Residents and the Chamber of Commerce opposed the plans. In 2006, Dudley Council again rejected plans submitted by Tesco.
