Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Residents and traders in Barnsley formed a campaign group "WASP" (Wilthorpe Against Supermarket Planning) "a sting to the community to fight plans to turn  "The Wilthorpe" pub on Huddersfield Road into a supermarket.

The group gathered around 450 petitions against the development.  However, Councillors approved the minor applications.

Penistone, Barnsley

Residents formed Penistone Residents Against Large Supermarkets (PRALS) in 2006 to campaign against plans for a 24,000 sq ft Tesco supermarket in the town. The group collected evidence against the store and called on Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to reject the proposals and instead invite proposals for a mixed use of the site.
