Campaigning to curb supermarket power

In Wetherby Sainsbury’s plans to build a 35,000 ft sq store on the site of the Mercure Hotel, formerly the Ramada Jarvis.  Wetherby Civic Society, Wetherby Business Association and Wetherby Town Council had all objected to the plans and the council had received more than 200 objections individual letters of objection.

Asda applied for permission to build a 24-hour store and petrol station on greenfield land opposite the Sandbeck Industrial Estate. In September 2012 it displayed plans for a second time but the plans were refused in May 2013.

Tesco is believed to want to build a 40,000 ft sq site on land near to Sandbeck Industrial Estate at a different location to Asda.

Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel rejected the scheme to build a 25,000 sq ft supermarket on land off Sandbeck Lane today after a council report said the plans would have a detrimental affect on trade in Wetherby town centre, making the town less attractive to shoppers.
