Application Granted

Council planners recommended Councillors refuse the Asda application because they felt another site in Ware – the Crane Mead/Swains Mill site – is more suitable for a food store and is nearer the town centre. However, in December the development control committeee said there were “clear and overriding reasons” that justified approving the plans. The decision was referred to the Secretary of State but in January 2011 it was confirmed that the Secretary of State would not be calling-in the application.

New Application submitted

In February 2010 Asda revived plans to build a new £20m store on the former Cintel site in Ware. The size of the store in the new plans was significantly reduced, from 36,230sq ft (3,366sq m) to 28,000sq ft (2,601sq m).
