Residents set up a campaign group "Say no to Sainsbury's" to protest against an application by Sainsbury's to build a supermarket on sports fields in the town. Sainsbury's applied for permission to build a split-level food store on Callington Road with underground parking for 284 cars. It also planned to regenerate the Warfelton playing fields to create a full-size and junior pitch with new changing rooms and a club house. Caradon District Council received 2,600 objection letters in response to the application.
In April 2012 the Co-operative lodged an objection to the proposed new Tesco store, warning that if the scheme goes ahead there could be a devastating effect on local trade in the area.
