Campaigning to curb supermarket power

North Somercotes, Grimsby

A shopkeeper says building a Co-Op supermarket would destroy his “traditional” village. The Co-Op are planning a new store in the village. The application is to build a “convenience store, together with associated plant, servicing facilities, car parking and alterations to vehicle/pedestrian access points” at the former Exchange Garage on Conisholme Road.

Some local residents have expressed concern over the plans as the village already suffers congestion. Residents of North Somercotes have made a number of objections to East Lindsey District Council about the plans. One resident said: “North Somercotes is already adequately serviced by two convenience stores, and this Co-Op could really jeopardise the livelihood of these businesses and many staff members could lose their jobs.
