Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Mytchett, Surrey

More than 1,200 residents petitioned the council to oppose the plans submitted by agent Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners on behalf of Tesco in December 2012, proposing to convert the ground floor of a vacant two-storey commercial building in Mytchett Road into a Tesco Express store.

Councillors felt the plans showed a ‘disregard’ for pedestrian safety, would result – by Tesco’s own admission – in a 50% increase in vehicles entering and leaving the site onto Mytchett Road and no concern for nearby residents who would be subjected to opening hours from 7am to 11pm.
