Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Mexborough, South Yorkshire

A campaign group, Save the High Street, was formed in Mexborough to fight against a proposed supermarket. The group submitted a formal collective objection to the plan for a 50,000 sq ft store with a filling station and a carpark for 300. It also completed a survey of businesses in the town centre, which indicated many are against the proposals. Of 92 business owners who responded, 69 said they felt the new store would have a negative effect on the town.

Mexborough has a dual carriageway which effectively isolates the area proposed from other parts of the town and its community. The dual carriageway at peak times is now beginning to help cause congestion in other residential parts of the town. Mexborough has witnessed some serious injuries and a number of fatalities. The town centre is still a place of social activity particularly for older shoppers who do not or cannot drive and who have appreciated this part of community live for year.
