Developer Albourne Property floated the idea of a new store at Lambs Barn at a private meeting with town Councillors in January 2012. The meeting was intended to help the firm gauge opinion in the town before it submits a planning application to Cornwall Council.
However, the plans attracted a wave of criticism from some residents – many of whom are angry at not being told of the proposals. A campaign group called Stop The Supermarket was launched. Objections raised by locals include the fact that the proposed site is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; that it would have a negative impact on an established community and shops; and that the infrastructure is already overstretched as it is.
