Hundreds of residents joined a campaign opposing plans to build a Tesco just half a mile away from the chain’s flagship Brookfield Centre store. Tesco wants to convert the former Zenz House Chinese restaurant in Flamstead End Road into a Tesco Express.
The campaign group Every Little Hurts claims 201 people have put pen to paper to oppose the convenience store, which would stand a stone’s throw from the 65,000 sq ft (6,039 sq m) Tesco Extra at Brookfield.
The restaurant has been disused for months, but campaigners have cited traffic concerns in adjoining Brookfield Lane and a lack of parking spaces as reasons to reject the latest proposals.
A spokesman for the group said: “In 2013 the council declined this application on the grounds that ‘the traffic generated would put pressure on an already busy road junction’ and it would cause significant disruption to residents.
