Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire

In 2005 Tesco submitted plans to move its existing town centre store to create a bigger store on the outskirts of Carmarthen, which would be the biggest Tesco store in Wales. Traders were concerned that they would lose business as shoppers would be lured out of town. Objectors included the Chamber of Commerce, Town Forum, Civic Society and local Friends of the Earth group. However, the plans were approved in 2005.

In 2017 more plans for a supermarket and two food outlets in a residential area of Carmarthen have been met with strong objections. More than 700 people signed a petition against the plans which are earmarked for land within the site of the former Cartref Tawelan care home in Johnstown.  A planning application has been lodged by Aspect Developments Ltd is behind the scheme. The plans see proposals for three units, one which a national convenience retailer is interested in, along with two smaller units, which are also understood to be being looked at national companies.
