Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Camelford, Cornwall

Plans for two supermarkets have been put forward for Camelford.

In May 2011 Cornwall Council said it had accepted an offer from Tesco for the site of a former primary school in the Highfield area of Camelford.  However, the move is subject to the scheme getting planning permission. In January 2012 Tesco displayed its plans for a 10,000 sq ft store at a public consultation.

In April 2012 Walker Developments registered its application for a 20,000sq ft store on land at Culloden off Victoria Road at the northern edge of the town centre.  At the end of August Councillors approved the plans by 18 votes to 1, despite commissioning a report from property experts GVA Grimley to look into the impact a new store would have on the existing town centre shops. The research suggested that some existing traders would lose more than half their trade if Councillors approved the plans. Please see an article in the Cornwall Local News, 31st August 2012.

Meanwhile, Tesco, announced it will not be progressing its proposals.
