Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Ammanford, Carmarthenshire

Residents opposed Tesco's plans for a new store in Ammanford. Tesco plans to build a new store, double the size of its existing store were approved in 2008.

In February 2011 plans for a 47,500-square-foot supermarket were submitted by local building contractor TRJ. However, TRJ had been in talks with two companies, understood to be Morrisons and Sainsbury's. But both have pulled out. County planning officers also said there might be problems with the proposed site because of the nearby river and the possibility that some of the land was contaminated.
